How much does it cost?
Nothing. Rook Learning is free while it is in early access. We never ask for card details, so there is nothing we could charge. If we add paid plans later, we will tell you first, and it will be up to you whether to choose one.
Which ages is it for?
Years 4 to 11, roughly ages 8 to 16. Writing prompts, questions, rubrics and word counts are pitched at the child's year.
What will my child write?
Answers on the books they read, homework from any subject, and every kind of writing school teaches: persuasive, narrative, descriptive, newspaper report, diary entry, formal letter, balanced argument and explanation.
Will the AI write it for them?
No. The AI only marks work that has been handed in. Its feedback says what to improve and where to look, never the words to write or the right answer. There is no chat, so there is nothing to ask it for.
Where does my child's writing go? Is it used to train AI?
It is kept in your child's account. Only your child, you, anyone you link to them (a second parent or their tutor) and we can see it. To mark it, the writing is sent to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, which does not use it to train its models. A photo of notes is read once and never stored. Our privacy policy has the details.
How is the writing marked?
Against a rubric for your child's year, written against the National Curriculum in England. Spelling, punctuation and length are checked by rules, not guessed. The rest is marked by AI, which gives a reason and quotes the words it is marking for every score, and checks what your child says against notes on the book.
Does my child see a percentage?
No. Your child sees every part of their writing scored out of 10, with what that score means in words (Going well, Getting there or Next step) and a reason, and the parts that would make the most difference come first. Instead of a total or a percentage they get a rating in words: Working towards, Expected, Strong or Exceptional. A total of 70% can be strong work for their year, but a child who knows 100% from maths tests reads it as a fail. You, and their tutor if you link one, see the total and the percentage too.
Can I disagree with a mark?
Yes. A parent or tutor can change any score and add a comment. Your child sees your comment and the rating your score gives, and the original mark is kept so you can always see both.
Do we need to buy the books?
Only for the reading. Your child reads their own copy, from a library, a bookshop or school. We never show the text of a book. They can add any book they are reading by its ISBN and get questions on it.
Does my child need an email address?
No. You create their account and choose a username and a PIN for them. They sign in with those, and never need an email address.
Can their tutor see their work too?
Yes. You can link your child's tutor, who can then set books and writing, and follow their progress alongside you. Two parents can share a child as well.
Who made it?
A parent. We built Rook Learning for our own children, and opened it up so other families can use it too.
